The official JFT-Basic has approximately 50 questions in 60 minutes across four sections: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening Comprehension, and Reading Comprehension. The Japan Foundation publishes official sample questions, but its FAQ says past test questions are not currently planned for publication.
What is the JFT-Basic test format?
| Section | What it checks |
|---|---|
| Script and Vocabulary | Word meaning and use, kanji reading, meaning and use |
| Conversation and Expression | Grammar and expressions for everyday conversations |
| Listening Comprehension | Conversations, exchanges in public places, instructions and announcements |
| Reading Comprehension | Short texts and finding practical information |
You may review answers within the same section. Once you move to the next section, you cannot return. In Listening Comprehension, you cannot move backward or forward to review other questions.
Where can I find official JFT-Basic practice questions?
Use the official sample questions from the Japan Foundation to understand the computer-based interface and question types. The official FAQ says past test questions are not currently planned for publication, so be careful with files labelled “real past papers” or “official PDFs” on third-party sites.
JFT Pass is an independent study app. Its practice content is not an official past paper and the app is not affiliated with the Japan Foundation or the official test operator.
A practical mock-test study plan
- Learn the interface: complete the official sample questions first.
- Measure each section: record accuracy for vocabulary, conversation, listening and reading.
- Practice weak areas: repeat question types you miss, not only the answers you remember.
- Run a timed session: practise staying focused for the 60-minute test.
- Review the cause: identify whether each mistake came from vocabulary, grammar, listening or time pressure.
How are JFT-Basic scores reported?
The total score ranges from 10 to 250. Since August 2026, 145–174 is assessed as A1, 175–199 as A2.1, and 200–250 as A2.2 (A2). Results appear on the test computer after the exam, and the official notification is issued on the Prometric website within five business days.
